Tyrell's Smithcraft Page

Welcome to my page.  This page will be constantly under construction, so surf at your own risk.
Updated 2/5/00

This page is about both historical and modern magico-religious practices of blacksmithing and metalworking.   I am concentrating mostly on historic pre-Judeo-Christian practices of the Norse and Celts, but have expanded my research to other areas.  I will break down the information presented here into two categories:  Re-creation of Historical practices based on research along with documentation of such, and Modern practices by individuals which may or may not be historically accurate.
If you are looking for instructions on how to make Excalibur, Stormbringer, or any other magic blades... please go elsewhere. You certainly won't find that information here. I also have an E-mail list for the discussion of Smithcraft. You can subscribe by going to:  http://www.onelist.com/subscribe/Smithcraft_List

Historic - information based on research

Viking Blacksmithing is a four part article titled 'Blacksmithing in the Viking Age' by Bruce Blackistone.   Part One is on Tools and Materials.  Part Two lists Books and Resources.  Part Three is on the capabilities of the smiths.  And Part Four is on Viking age swords.

G.A. Wainwright wrote an article in the journal, Antiquity, called 'The Coming of Iron".  It is about the significance of iron, and its magical and religious properties it was believed to have according to the Egyptian people.  Here is my synopsis and notes on Wainwright's article "The Coming of Iron" (Antiquity 10, 1936, pp. 5-25).

Modern - practices from the present day or practices that attempt to recreate those of earlier peoples, but do not have documentation to validate their use.

I have had the interesting experience of forging in a ritual state. I was forging a ceremonial axehead in sacred space, during a shamanic voyage.   Here is an account of that experience .

Here is a list of some of the books that I have found that I believe are good references for smithcraft magic.

Mark Cook has graciously allowed me to put up a description of a Forge Dedication ceremony he did for his Brake-drum forge and a recording of the song he sang for it.  Listen to The Blacksmith's Art    (updated)
