Patrick Troughton joined the show in 1966. This incarnation had an opposite personality from that of his predecessor. He was regarded as somewhat of a 'cosmic hobo' in both mannerisms and dress. His trademarks were his 500 Year Diary and his recorder (a flute-like instrument he tried to play, but seemed to be tone-deaf with it.). He passed on the mantle of the Doctor in 1969 to Jon Pertwee. It was in his final episode that we learned that he was on the run from his own people, the Timelords, and that he had stolen his TARDIS. Troughton later appeared in 'The Three Doctors', 'The Five Doctors' and 'The Two Doctors' (he starred alongside Colin Baker). He is also the only lead actor in the series to have appeared with 5 other versions of the Doctor.
