The first Doctor was played by William Hartnell and made his debut in 1963. Little was known about the Doctor during this era, except that he and his granddaughter were aliens on the run in a stolen TARDIS. He was obviously a brilliant scientist, but had little patience at times. This was to change as the character of the Doctor evolved into something a little more human. In 1966, it was decided that Hartnell would leave the series. The writers, in turn, came up with the plausible idea of the Doctor having multiple lives. This worked very well as the lead role was then passed on to Patrick Troughton. He consequently appeared in the episode 'The Three Doctors' along with Troughton and the third Doctor, Jon Pertwee. Unfortunately, his appearances were limited due to his failing health. Hartnell later died, but was featured in a video clip in the opening of 'The Five Doctors'. His replacement for that episode was actor William Hurndall.
